What is your Name? Joanna Finegan
Where are you From? Ardee, Co Louth
Where do you Work? Learning & Outreach at the National Library of Ireland
Did you always want to be a librarian and if not what did you do before? For a while I thought I’d like to be a graphic designer and illustrator but after college I saw a Graduate Library Trainee post in Trinity College and that changed my life. True.
What is you average day like? It depends on what we’re doing in Learning & Outreach, my day is mix of lots of things which are rarely the same. It includes working with colleagues to put together and run events programmes or meeting groups of students or researchers that are coming in to the library for the first time. At the moment I’m working with colleagues on our new Library Late series which this season features interviews with contemporary Irish writers for stage and screen.
How many people do you work with?
There are six in our department, we often work with interns from overseas and we collaborate with colleagues throughout the library.
What do you enjoy most about the job?
Connecting people with the National Library and the collections here and also seeing the creative and innovative ways that colleagues are developing to do this. It’s wonderful when someone encounters material in the collections that has a very personal connection to them, for example something relating to their own family or locality. It’s also really rewarding to be able to welcome visitors and new users to the library and introduce them to the collections through our exhibitions and reading rooms which are here for their use, delight and pleasure.
How do you unwind after a hard day? Catching up with friends for a film, bite to eat or a drink, also sporadic bouts of knitting and yoga, although not both at the same time.

Where do you Work?
I work as a library assistant in the James Joyce Library in University College Dublin. I work in the Humanities and Social Sciences section.
Did you always want to be a librarian and if not what did you do before? Before working as a library assistant in U.C.D. I worked in the corporate and library sales department in Hodges Figgis book shop on Dawson Street.
Through my work I met librarians and library assistants mostly from public libraries who came in to do their stock buys with us. It was then I decided that I would like to work in a library.
