A Day in Your Life
Welcome
Sunday, 20 January 2008

Welcome to the ‘A Day in Your Life' section of our Library Ireland Week website.

One of the major themes of the 2008 Library Ireland Week celebration was to focus on the many different kinds of libraries there are in Ireland and to show how diverse our work can be. The purpose of this section is to give you some idea of the professional work that our colleagues do from day to day and to put some names to faces too.

So whether you are part of a big team in a busy university or public library or maybe you work in a different environment such as in a health, legal or government library, we hope to give you a flavour of the routines and priorities of other locations. It may even inspire you to change how you think about your job.

If you would like to share your story with us, please contact us . Read on and enjoy...

I’m the ever helpful face of inter-library loans at Institute of Technology Tallaght (ITT Dublin)

What do you spend most of your day doing?

Depending on the weekly rota, I am generally at my desk by 9a.m., although the start time can be later depending on what late night duties that I am on. After settling down at my desk, my first task usually involves sorting through interlibrary loan requests and forwarding them on to the appropriate lending library. I log all the loans that have come in or being returned. Incoming loans are sorted for collection by the person who requires them.

I did my primary degree in Social Science and at the time this “new course” on Information Studies was an option but I didn’t take it! However one of my friends did and I think this along with the fact that I worked for a summer in Dublin Public Libraries planted the seed. When I graduated from Social Science I worked for a year in a bookshop and then applied for the library course in UCD and haven’t looked back.

Michelle Breen, UL Library
Tuesday, 05 February 2008

Michelle BreenWhat is your name?
Michelle Breen.

Where are you from?
Sneem, Co. Kerry.

Where do you work?
I work in the Information Services Department in UL Library.

What do you spend most of your day doing?
I am a Faculty Librarian within Science and Engineering and currently have responsibility for the subject areas of Architecture and Science.  My job involves a lot of interaction with people; teaching information literacy to undergraduates, responding to researchers’  typically abstract yet intricate queries, keeping faculty and staff updated about the Library’s resources and interacting with my Library colleagues. Every day is different however with priorities shifting as the week goes by. The kind of job I have means that I could be selecting books for purchase in the morning, writing something for the blog after lunch and doing a Library tour in the afternoon.  I enjoy the variety.
